Soni Marsan Congleton, 84, died Monday, April 5, 2021 at Hillside Nursing & Rehab in Wake Forest from complications related to her dementia.
She leaves her daughter, Lorraine Marsan Lyles; sons Charles Matthew Congleton, and Daniel Whitfield Congleton; granddaughters Aimee Marsan Young, Morgan Wallace Congleton, Alexandria Clay Congleton, and Addison Bailey Congleton; grandson Austin Edward Congleton; and three great-grandchildren Zeke, Ryan, and Sadie.
She was preceded in death by her spouse, Edward David Congleton in 2000, who died from Alzheimer’s at 68; and her grandson, Bryan Lee Wilkerson, in 2004, who died at the age of 28.
Born in Cleburne, Texas, August 20, 1936, Soni spent her childhood growing up in Texas, later meeting her husband in San Antonio where he was stationed in the Air Force. Soni spent many years traveling the world with her husband, Ed, during his 28-year military career until they settled in Washington, North Carolina where she resided for over forty years before her passing.
In the years that followed, Soni volunteered over 20 years of her life as a scout leader, and member of the executive council for the East Carolina Council of the Boy Scouts of America. In this time she earned a Silver Beaver, the highest and most prestigious honor awarded to a volunteer by a local council; an award that is given to those who have given continued, unselfish, and effective service to the community through hard work, self-sacrifice, dedication, and many years of service. Later in life, Soni turned her long-time passion for antiques into a well-known consignment shop called Finders Keepers.
A celebration of life will be held at the Washington Civic Center, April 25th between 2 and 5pm. We welcome those who knew Soni to join us in remembrance of her life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The Alzheimer’s Association, a non-profit organization that aims to lead the way to end Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.
