Five employees with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office have had their appointment terminated as of Tuesday, May 4.
All five former employees received letters signed by Chief Deputy Charlie Rose informing them of their immediate termination that stated, “This letter is your formal notification of the immediate termination of your appointment as an employee with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office. Your services are no longer required. I wish the best for you on your future endeavors.”
The five employees fired include three deputies with the department, Corey Rogerson, Darin Hall and Daniel Babos, one detention officer, James Rogerson and one administrative assistant, Kasie Babos.
All five letters of termination were acquired through a public records request with the Beaufort County Human Resources department. Under North Carolina law, these dismissal letters are available and listed as public records.
The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is an at-will employer in North Carolina. According to the North Carolina Department of Labor, at-will employers can terminate employees at any time as they see fit.
At will employment is described in post to the N.C. Department of Labor as a term “that unless there is a specific law to protect employees or there is an employment contract providing otherwise, then an employer can treat its employees as it sees fit (including the assignment of demeaning tasks) and the employer can discharge an employee at the will of the employer for any reason or no reason at all.”
The sheriff’s office has made no public comment on these firings.
