Dr. Joseph Garfield Ange

Dr. Joseph Garfield Ange, 88, of Raleigh, passed away Saturday, July 16, 2011. Dr. Ange was born in Martin County on Dec. 19, 1922, to the late Snoad John Ange and Bertha Mae Ange. On April 6, 1947, he married Hazel Pearl Heynen. Dr. Ange pastored Free Will Baptist churches in Tennessee, Michigan, and North Carolina. From 1960 to 1976, he served on the Foreign Mission Board for Free Will Baptists. In 1971, Dr. Ange was awarded an honorary doctorate from Bob Jones University. The following year, he became the director of religious activities and the campus pastor at Free Will Baptist Bible College in Nashville, Tenn. Dr. Ange was elected the first full-time president of Southeastern Free Will Baptist College in 1983. He oversaw the construction and occupation of the new campus in 1987. As long as his health permitted, Dr. Ange was a devoted member of Landmark Free Will Baptist Church, where he served as an adult Sunday School teacher and Senior Saints pastor for 10 years.
A celebration of his life will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 21, 2011, at Landmark Free Will Baptist Church, 9011 Chapel Hill Road, Cary, NC 27513.
The family will receive relatives and friends prior the service from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 22, 2011, at Wendley Cemetery in Plymouth, NC, 27962.
Dr. Ange was preceded in death by his grandson, Aaron Timothy Trimble. He is survived by his wife, Hazel Heynen Ange of 64 years; sons: Stephen Mark Ange of Martinsville, Va., Rev. Philip Jonathan Ange (Carolyn) of Greenville, Rev. Nathanael Joseph Ange (Becky) of Cary; daughters: Ruth Ange Little (Gary) of Raleigh, Rhoda Ange Trimble (Rev. Tim Trimble) of Pelham, Ala.; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren.
