Vidant Beaufort announced that it will host two free skin cancer screening events in September, in partnership with the Shepard Cancer Foundation.
The first event will be held from 5 – 7 p.m. on Sept. 14 at Vidant Multispecialty Clinic in Belhaven, and the second event will take place from 5 – 7 p.m. on Sept. 21 at the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Care Center. To register for a screening, call 252-975-8850.
“One of the benefits of eastern North Carolina living includes the proximity to beaches, waterways and a multitude of outdoor recreation activities — perfect for the summertime,” a Vidant release reads. “However, sun exposure is the greatest risk factor associated with skin cancer. If you’ve never been screened for cancer, this is an excellent opportunity to establish a baseline examination. Knowing what to look for helps you get skin cancer diagnosed earlier.
Per the Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S. and worldwide; one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70; having five or more sunburns doubles your risk for melanoma; and more than two people die of skin cancer in the U.S. every hour.
