Mrs. Charlene Bell Alligood, age 95, died Friday, November 5, 2021 at her home.
Graveside services were held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at Oakdale Cemetery in Washington conducted by Rev. Dr. Lonnie L. Darnell II and Rev. Bill Hufham.
The following served as pallbearers: Charles Harris, Jimmie Perry, Doug Boyd, Wayne Woolard, Harley Gravely, Tommy Swanner and Billy Braddy.
Mrs. Alligood was born in Beaufort County on July 15, 1926. She was the daughter of the late Charlie Jackson Bell and Sue Swanner Bell. Mrs. Alligood attended Washington City Schools and graduated in 1944. She then attended UNC-G (Women’s College) graduating with a two-year business degree. Mrs. Alligood worked as a bank teller and bookkeeper at several local financial institutions and also for her family’s business, Alligood’s Garage, but she most enjoyed being a homemaker.
Mrs. Alligood was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Washington. She was a member of the Women of the Church and received an honorary lifetime membership; she also served as Chairman of the Kitchen Committee, past Sunday School teacher, and member of the ladies’ circle. She had a passion for helping others. She enjoyed visiting, sharing her food, and especially giving candy and sweets to anyone who visited.
Mrs. Alligood was married to William McDevett “Mac “Alligood, who preceded her in death, October 18, 2015.
Mrs. Alligood is survived by a daughter, Susan Alligood Stuart, and husband, Bill of Cape Carteret; a son, William McDevett “Bill Mac” Alligood Jr. and wife, Mary Ann of Washington; two grandsons, William McDevett Alligood III and wife, Katherine of Washington; Thomas Whitney Alligood and wife, Mary Margaret of Greenville; three great-grandsons, William McDevett “Liam” Alligood IV, John Luke Alligood, Walker James Alligood; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A special thanks to all the caregivers that assisted over the years. The Alligood family was blessed to have such wonderful help taking care of their beloved mother.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kitchen Fund, or Methuselah Fund c/o First Presbyterian Church, 211 West Second Street, Washington, N.C. 27889.
The family received friends following the service at the cemetery.
