After attending Terra Ceia Christian School since kindergarten, Hensley Jordan decided she needed a change for her senior year, so she transferred to Northside. The Pantego native talks about switching schools, playing sports and her lofty career goal.

 

1. Why did you come to Northside for your senior year?

 

Hensley: I just felt like I needed a change and Northside provided a bigger environment. I would have been one of four kids in my graduating class and I wanted to be around more people in a different setting. I’ve enjoyed my classes, teachers and playing sports here, so it’s worked out well.

 

2. You played a lot on the volleyball team in the fall and worked your way into the basketball starting lineup at guard. How hard was it to join those teams as a senior?

 

Hensley: Not hard at all because my teammates have been terrific and I’ve built some great relationships with them on and off the court. I like to play defense, so that’s helped me play more. I’m pretty good at anticipating passes and getting steals. I’m also a positive person and try to encourage my teammates when things aren’t going well.

 

3. Michelle Leathers has coached you in both sports. How has she helped you get comfortable in a new environment?

 

Hensley: I’ve loved playing for her because she knows how to push the right buttons to get everyone to do their best. She’s a great motivator and uses tough love to help us listen and improve. She teaches us life lessons as well to help us be successful in life, so it’s not just about sports for her.

 

4. What other sports have you played?

 

Hensley: I was a gymnast from second grade until I started playing basketball and volleyball in seventh grade at Terra Ceia. The drive to Greenville for gymnastics got to be too much, so I stopped to play school sports. The balance beam was my favorite, because all your moves have to be precise. I also did some trampoline gymnastics and some tumbling while I was there.

 

5. What does your future hold after graduation?

 

Hensley: I am hoping to go to flight school, so I can get my pilot’s license and fly big airplanes. Delta Airlines has a program and you don’t have to have experience to apply, so I’m looking into that. I love heights and I’m very interested in going that route. I’m also taking classes at Beaufort County Community College toward a psychology degree and will finish it at ECU.
