At their next regular meeting on Monday evening (Sept 12), Washington City Council will address stormwater issues throughout the city. 

According to an agenda published on Thursday, city public works has several requests for action to present to council. Council will vote to apply for financial assistance from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality Division Water Infrastructure. The agenda did not list how much funding the city plans to request. 

The first project the city hopes to complete with funding from Environmental Quality is drainage for Simmons Street as well as adding automated screens for Jacks Creek pump station. 

The second project is for stormwater drainage improvements in the Medical District. 

City council will also vote to allow Public Works to apply for a program under the American Rescue Plan Act called the Local Assistance for Stormwater Infrastructure Investments Program. The grant has a limit of $400,000 per applicant, per grant cycle. This will help public works keep an inventory of stormwater systems and document their condition. 

City Council will meet at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall at 102 E Second Street.
