Raiders compete in conference tournament

It was another busy week for Pungo Christian Academy as the Raiders closed out the regular season on the hardwood.
PCA hosted Ridgecroft School Tuesday for Senior Night. The Lady Raiders outscored the Rams 17 – 8 in the 3rd quarter to pull away and win 52 – 39, avenging their only conference loss. Reagan Stoop scored 30 points and pulled in 12 rebounds. Alden Taylor and Ashley Williford scored six points apiece for PCA. Allison Sawyer grabbed 10 rebounds and Abbey Cutler dished out nine assists.
In the boys game, the Raiders found themselves down 17 points midway through the 3rd quarter. Pungo was able to maintain their composure and close the gap to one point with just over three minutes to play. Davis Lee went on a 5 – 0 run to put the Raiders up four and bring the crowd to its feet. However, Ridgecroft answered with a 10 – 0 run to send the Raiders home with an 80 – 74 loss. Quay Artis led PCA with 18 points and 11 assists. Drew Van Staalduinen (17), Davis Lee (15) and Maddox Lee (14) had double figures for PCA. Van Staalduinen recorded his 10th double – double this season with 11 rebounds.
On Thursday the PCA boys coasted to a 70-50 victory at Mattamuskeet. The Raiders went up 21 – 11 in the first and never looked back, to end their two-game losing skid. Artis led the Raiders again with 21 points and five assists. Maddox Lee added 19 points and eight assists, while Van Staalduinen chipped in 11 points and 10 rebounds.
On Friday Pungo made the short trip to Terra Ceia for the Knights senior night. The Lady Knights were able to keep the game close for three quarters, but the Lady Raiders ended on a 13 – 2 run to seal the 56 – 38 victory. Stoop was dominant again, with 26 points and 15 rebounds. Ashley Williford scored 14 while Sawyer scored eight and grabbed seven rebounds.
The boys won 79-62 behind 23 points and six assists from Artis. Maddox Lee scored 22 points while Van Staalduinen added 19 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lady Raiders are the #1 seed in this week’s TIC Tournament at Northeast Academy. They will play the winner of Northeast/Albemarle on Wednesday and with a victory, play for the TIC Championship on Friday. Game times are set for 6:30 for both nights.
The boys are the #2 seed and will play the winner of Northeast/Lawrence on Thursday and would play on Friday in the Championship with a win. Game times are set for 8:00 for both nights.
