A former Washington Montessori Public Charter School (WMPCS) high school teacher was charged with indecent liberties with a student which is a felony in North Carolina.
Washington Police Department charged Abigail Hope Spencer, science teacher at the school.
Washington Daily News spoke with the school’s attorney, Lisa Gordon Stella who confirmed Spencer was charged.
Spencer resigned from the school prior to it being brought to administrator’s attention in December over the holiday break; therefore, the school has little information about what happened between Spencer and a student, Stella explained.
Stella said WMPCS immediately made a report with the Washington Police Department in December and has “complied with their legal duties to a tee.”
On Tuesday, April 18, WMPCS sent a letter to families stating they acknowledged a former WMPCS employee faced criminal charges. “We can share that the school takes the safety and security of its students seriously and has been engaged in ongoing cooperation with law enforcement.”
According to Stella, Spencer had worked at the school since the 2021-2022 school year.
Spencer’s scheduled court date is Thursday, June 29 at the Beaufort County Courthouse.
