Washington High School sophomore Emma Orr and Northside junior Bella Boykin were named third team All-State in softball by the Raleigh-based website HighSchoolOT.com.

Orr made the third team last year as a freshman, while Boykin was selected for the first time this year.

Orr, a lefthander, led the Pam Pack to an 18-6 record and a trip to the third round of the 2A state playoffs. She had an 0.70 ERA with 161 strikeouts in 100.1 innings. Opponents batted just .108 against her.

“She had more responsibility this year because our offense wasn’t as good,” WHS coach Brad Horton said. “She handled being in more close games very well and worked hard to improve her mechanics. That led to more accuracy and better location. She developed command of her other pitches and didn’t let the tight situations rattle her.”

Boykin was named to the third team as a two-way player because she hit .508 for the Panthers with seven home runs, 34 RBI and 31 runs scored and played several spots when she wasn’t pitching.

In the circle she had a 1.00 ERA with 113 strikeouts in 77.1 innings pitched as Northside went 20-5 and made the fourth round of the 1A playoffs.

Orr and Boykin were among 26 pitchers chosen among the three state-wide teams regardless of classification and are among the group of 16 who will return next spring.
