Chocowinity native Tequon Moore has shown remarkable versatility on the field, court and track during his Southside athletic career. He’s a running back, receiver, linebacker and defensive back on the football field, a point guard in basketball, a shortstop/center fielder in baseball and is part of two track relay teams while competing in the long jump.  A strong student with a 3.8 GPA, Moore also has a unique nickname that he’d like to hear less often.

1. You have been known as “Tater” most of your life. How did you get that nickname?

Tequon: My mom said I looked like a tater tot when I was a baby, so my parents started calling me that. It changed to Tater when I got older and I would like to go by Tequon now that I’m older. I’m still fine with people calling me Tater, but Tequon sounds more professional and grown up.

2. If you could only pick one sport, what would it be?

Tequon: Football, because I’ve been playing since I was five or six and hope to keep playing in college. I love the physical part of it and it helps me stay focused in the classroom and off the field. My parents signed me up for the Chocowinity Rec League as soon as I was old enough and I’ve loved the game ever since.

3. What is your football highlight so far?

Tequon: Beating Northside on their field to win the Anchor Bowl last year. We had not won it since I’ve been here and we did it for the coaches and the seniors. I had a big hit on their quarterback to stop a drive and winning still means a lot. I look at that trophy every day when I pass the gym and I know it will be a challenge to keep it this year. It’s a great game to be part of.

4. What are your highlights in the other sports?

Tequon: Pamlico County is always hard to beat in basketball and they left me open for a 3-pointer with about a minute left. I made it to put us ahead and our crowd went crazy. We hung on to win, so that was really fun. I hit a baseball really far at our field my sophomore year and I thought it was over the fence, but it hit the very top. I ran hard all the way and it was an inside the park home run. My freshman year, we won our heat in the 4 x 100 relay at the state meet on the N.C. A&T track in Greensboro. That was pretty cool also.

5. Where would you like to play college football and what skills do you think will help you get there?

Tequon: My speed, quickness and acceleration have always helped me succeed. I seem to get from point A to point B pretty quickly. I went to a bunch of camps over the summer and am talking with N.C. Central, UNC-Pembroke, Elizabeth City State, Barton and a few others. I’m trying to have the best season I can and we’ll see how college works out.
