Football: PCA found themselves down 6 – 0 early in their home opener over Columbia before going on a 32 – 0 run over the next two quarters to pull away from the Wildcats for a 48 – 28 victory. Raider tailback Quay Artis was sidelined for most of the game with an injury, forcing Wells Eagles to move to tailback and McKinney Waters to come in and play fullback. The duo ran for over 100 yards on the ground and each scored touchdowns. Waters and Parker Byrd each had interception returns for touchdowns, with Byrd only needing one hand to grab his and ran 80 yards for the score. Austin Gibbs ran for a touchdown and threw for two more, with Evan Woolard and Artis catching touchdowns. Artis was able to return in the fourth quarter and had his fourth consecutive game with over 100 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown. The Raiders are 3 – 1 and open conference play this week by hosting Lawrence Academy Friday at 4 p.m

Soccer: The Raiders soccer team went 1 – 1 on the week to bring their overall record to 4 – 2 – 1. PCA traveled to Albemarle School and brought home a 7 – 0 win with six goals in the second half, led by Maddox Lee’s hat trick. Austin Garrish scored his first two goals of the season while Bruce Taylor also added his first goal. Brooke Baxter added a goal as well and goalkeeper Bo Spencer posted his first shutout.

Thursday, PCA traveled to Washington Montessori and fell 4 – 3. The Eagles scored the go-ahead goal in the final minute of regulation to seal the win. Lee, Baxter and Taylor all netted goals for the Raiders. PCA has a six game home stretch over the next three weeks. They host Oakwood School and Albemarle School this week.

Tennis: The Lady Raiders also went 2 – 1 on the week, bringing their season record to 6 – 2. Tuesday the Raiders hosted their first ever “home” match at Washington High School and defeated Northeast Academy 8 – 1. PCA won all doubles and five out of six singles. Thursday PCA fell 7 – 2 to Lawrence Academy. PCA was swept in doubles and Kaitlyn Williamson and Melanie Rutledge won their singles matches. Monday was bounce back day as PCA defeated Bear Grass, 7-2.

Volleyball: The Pungo volleyball team went 1 – 2 on the week to bring their season record to 6 – 5. On Tuesday, the Lady Raiders fell in 5 sets to Albemarle School. PCA lost the first set by 18 points before storming back to win the next two sets. Albemarle was able to regain momentum with a fourth set victory and send the Raiders home in the fifth. Autumn Gibbs had 16 kills in the loss. Alden Taylor added 10 kills while Anna Stoop had 28 assists.

Thursday the Raiders hosted Lawrence Academy in a crucial conference matchup. It appeared the Raiders were seeing de-ja-vu as PCA lost the first set big, won the next two but then couldn’t finish in the fourth. PCA was able to rally in the final set to earn a big conference victory at home. Gibbs and Taylor led the Raiders with 12 and 10 kills apiece. Stoop had 28 assists in the win.

Friday the Raiders traveled to undefeated Christ Covenant School. The Raiders appeared to be on their way to handing the Spartans their first loss of the season with consecutive victories in the first two sets. However, the Spartans were able to rally and put Pungo away in three consecutive sets to remain undefeated. This marked the fourth consecutive match that PCA went to five sets. PCA led 2 – 1 or better in all four games, but won just one out of the four matches.
