Tropical Storm Ophelia split the high school football week right down the middle as Northside and Washington High School played Thursday, Southside waited until Monday and Pungo Christian Academy didn’t play at all because of a partially flooded field in Belhaven.

Panthers running back Jamie Corprew turned in the top performance as the Northside offensive line opened enough holes for him to gain 212 yards on 17 carries with three touchdowns in the Panthers 47-7 rout of Martin County at Bing Mitchell Field. He had two runs of 31 yards and had five more carries of 10 yards or more as Northside (3-2) rolled up 409 rushing yards on 41 carries.

“He ran the ball well, as did several others and our offensive line did a good job after we made some adjustments,” coach Keith Boyd said. “We switched up some blocking assignments and that helped us run the ball effectively.”

Junior Max Vansant had 72 yards on seven carries, while sophomore Sincere Columbus added 66 on six carries with a touchdown. T.J. Squires and Hunter Chrismon also found the endzone. Chrismon was 7-9 passing, including a touchdown pass to Vansant, for 66 yards. Vansant (130) and Malachi Moore (100) had triple digit all-purpose yardage.

Gus Vansant led the defense with eight tackles, including one for a loss, while Corprew, Griffin Johnson, Tate Gibbs, Dashawn Smith and Landon Buck recorded sacks.

Washington: The Pam Pack (2-3) saw their two-game winning streak end with a 49-12 home loss to West Craven in the Eastern Plains 2A Conference opener Thursday. The running game produced just 63 yards, not including sacks as Keondrick Melton led the way with 25. Junior quarterback Cam Whitley was 3-7 for 133 yards with a 31-yard touchdown passes to Jerai Davenport and a 72-yard scoring strike to Jamel Corey. Senior Gary Payne led the defense with 7.5 tackles, including a sack. Calek Smaw had seven tackles with a sack, Marek Bates added 6.5 tackles with a sack and he also blocked an extra point attempt. Landon Jones was in on 5.5 tackles.

Southside: The Seahawks defense turned in a solid performance, but the offense couldn’t generate any points in a 26-0 Homecoming loss to Rosewood Monday night. The defense recovered three fumbles, including one by Alex Crisp and sophomore Teddrick Minor intercepted a pass, but Southside (0-5) couldn’t find the endzone. Fullback Brian Salinas ran for a team-leading 36 yards on 16 carries, while quarterback Luke Bullock completed two passes to senior Nolan Dixon for 26 yards.

Next up: Friday Northside (3-2) hosts 2A East Carteret (0-5) for Homecoming and the Coastal Plains Conference opener, Southside (0-5) hosts Pamlico County (0-5) in their CPC opener and Washington (2-3, 0-1) hosts Farmville Central (5-1, 1-1) for Homecoming. Pungo Christian Academy (3-1) will have its Homecoming Friday as well against Mattamuskeet (0-04) in 8-man action.
