Vonda Cuthrell Rice passed away in Chesapeake, Virginia on October 21, 2023, at the age of 92.  She was born in Swan Quarter, NC to the late John Tooley and Ruth Carawan Cuthrell.  She was predeceased by her three brothers:  Edward “Brother”, Elbert Dewey “Duke”, and Hoover; and two husbands Rupert McNarl Satterthwaite, Sr. from Ponzer, NC, and Zion Evans Rice also from Swan Quarter.

Vonda was raised on a farm with a milk cow, chickens, draft horses, and barn cats and went to town with a horse and cart.  She even picked cotton and was one of only five in her high school graduating class. She grew up playing barehanded softball and continued to be active in her adult life by walking, bicycling, and joining a bowling team bringing home four trophies.  With her first husband, Rupert, she built her home of 65 years near Great Bridge in Chesapeake, VA.  Her second husband, Zion, joined her there. Vonda made many friends in her neighborhood and through her church, Lindale Church of Christ which later became known as Shelter Christian Church.  She loved the Lord and was always concerned about others more so than herself.  Vonda got her greatest enjoyment from going fishing, spending time with her children and grandchildren, and being near the land working in her large vegetable garden and her flower gardens.

Vonda is survived by her four children, Rupert McNarl “Mack” Satterthwaite, Jr. (Bonnie), LaVerne Benns (Jim), William David Satterthwaite (Tracy), and Renee Rice (Michael Ogden); seven grandchildren, Daniel (Resa), Sarah (Brad), Andrea, Bill (Amanda), Stephanie (Jarad), James, and Matt (Ashley); and seven great grandchildren, Zoey, Olive, Avery, Ivy, Waylon, Cannon, and Leah; as well as many nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held Saturday, October 28, 2023, in Swan Quarter, NC starting with a visitation at Bryan Funeral Service, 119 Main Street, Swan Quarter, NC 27885 from 10:30 AM to 12:00 Noon followed by a graveside service at 1:00 PM at Soule Cemetery located at the junction of Highways 264 and 94 in Hyde County, NC.  All are welcome.

A Celebration of Life for Vonda will also be held in Chesapeake at Shelter Christian Church, 2526 Rodgers Street, on Sunday October 29, 2023, from noon to 2:00 PM.  All are welcome.
