Top performance: Corprew helps Panthers clinch crown

Northside, Southside and Washington ended the high school football regular season with victories Friday night and there were several standout individual performances. Jamie Corprew’s led the way.

Northside: The Panthers (8-2, 5-0) used their punishing rushing game to wrap up the Coastal Plains 1A/2A Conference championship with a 41-6 victory at Pamlico County. Senior Jamie Corprew’s standout season continued with 198 yards and four touchdowns on 18 carries, bringing his season total to 1413 yards and 23 touchdowns despite missing a game early in the season.

Junior Max Vansant had 109 yards rushing on only three carries that included a 38-yard scamper.

Malachi Moore (79) and Sincere Columbus (69) added to the Panthers 458 rushing yards and scored the other two touchdowns.

Defensivly, senior linebacker Gus Vansant posted a team-high 12 tackles and Holden Boykin intercepted a pass.

Southside: The Seahawks (4-6, 4-1) won their fourth straight game, 41-0 at winless Jones Sr. Tequon (Tater) Moore intercepted a pass and returned it 53 yards for Southside’s first touchdown. Moore also gained 71 yards rushing on five carries that included a 35-yard scoring run in the second quarter.

Fullback Brian Salinas had 66 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Southside gained 267 yards on 26 carries as the clock ran continuously most of the second half.

Myquan Clark and Devonelle Brimage scored Southside’s other two touchdowns and Chance Haywood made a 20-yard field goal.

Ryan Lewis recorded seven tackles, while Brimage had six, including two for loss. Salinas and Jeremiah Cruz recorded sacks.

Washington: The Pam Pack (3-7, 1-5) ended the season with a 34-14 victory at Ayden-Grifton. Washington rolled up 413 total yards, including 274 yards rushing. Senior Josh Gordon led the Pack with 125 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries, while junior Keondrick Melton 120 yards on 14 carries and also scored twice.

Quarterback Cam Whitley went 8-22 for 139 yards. Hunter Baldree and Gary Payne each caught three passes, while Jamel Corey caught two.

Calek Smaw had a 70-yard touchdown on an interception return, while Anderson Thomas, Baldree and Corey also picked off passes.
