Both Beaufort County high school boys soccer teams earned first round home victories in the state tournament Monday night.

16^th seeded Washington jumped out to a 4-1 lead over #17 SW Alamance from Haw River, then held on for a 5-3 victory in 2A, while 11^th-seede Southside routed #16 Perquimans, 8-1 in 1A.

Will Glover scored Washington’s first goal from the left side about 20 yards out five minutes into the game, but the Stallions tied the match on a shot that deflected off the left post and bounced in.

Victor Barrera answered on Washington’s next possession when the goalie slipped and fell, leaving the goal wide open, for a 2-1 halftime lead.

Glover made it 3-1 eight minutes into the second half with a blistering shot that ripped into the goal from 30 yards out, then Edgar Quevado seemingly put the match away at 4-1 with a goal three minutes later.

“Will’s shot was an absolute banger, no goalie stops that one, then we thought we were in charge after Edgar’s goal,” said coach Jim Kozuch. “Give credit for them for not quitting. We made a couple mistakes and it was 4-3 in a heartbeat.”

SW Alamance scored on a penalty kick and slipped behind the defense for another goal 30 seconds later and it was a new match.

Washington (15-5) added another defender and slowed the pace, but couldn’t relax until senior captain Ivan Machado’s goal found the left corner with one minute left.

“We were sloppy tonight and the match was much closer than it should have been, but we settled down and controlled things after they got close. We’re glad to advance and we’ll see what happens in the second round.

The Pack travels to top-seeded Clinton (20-2-1) for round two Thursday.

Meanwhile, senior Kenny Avila scored his 100^th career goal in 11^th seeded Southside’s 8-1 home rout of #16 Perquimans.

The milestone goal came early in the second half after he found the net twice in the first 40 minutes as the Seahawks (17-6) led 5-0 at halftime.

“We wanted to beat them on the edges and in the corners and we executed that plan very well,” coach Jay Petty said. “We played a complete 80 minutes tonight and our back line did a great job of spreading them out.”

Jonatan Trevino Perez, Pedro Chavez-Pullman, Taylor Ashley and Gersain Aguirre scored the other Seahawks goals, while Avila added two assists

They travel to conference rival Lejeune for the second round after splitting two regular season games with the Devil Pups.
