Mr. Frederick Hugh “Fred” Slann, age 64, a resident of Washington, NC died Wednesday November 8, 2023, at ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday November 12, 2023, in the Fellowship Hall of Old Ford Church of Christ, 6040 US-17 Washington, NC.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the funeral hour at the church.

Fred was born in Craven County on December 10, 1958, son of the late Leonard Joseph “L.J.” Slann, Sr. and the late Helen Barrow Slann.  He was a 1977 graduate of New Bern High School.  On May 21, 2016, he married the former Dawn Brinson, who survives.

Fred had a long career as a boat builder and was an expert in marine composites.  He worked with Hatteras Yachts, Regulator Marine, and Iconic Marine. As a USCG licensed captain, Fred owned and operated a fishing charter service for a number of years and also worked with Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company.  Fred loved fishing, boating and fly tying. He felt closest to God while fishing and being in nature.

Surviving along with his wife, Dawn, of the home are his children: Hunter Slann of Greenville, Anna Claire Slann of Charlotte, and Evan M. Slann of New Bern; a stepson: Brinson Langley of Raleigh; a brother: Joe Slann and his wife Chris of Beaumont, TX; a sister: Loretta Slann Knowles of New Bern; a mother-in-law: Norleen Brinson of Washington; and numerous special nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased along with his parents, by a sister: Martha Slann Knowles.
