WHS takes second in opening meet

The Washington High School girls and boys swim teams took second behind Havelock in the opening meet Saturday at the Hildred T. Moore Aquatic Center.

Southside and Jacksonville Northside also competed.

Sophomore Aubrey Woolard led the Washington girls with a first place finish in the 100 butterfly (1:08.25) and was part of the first place 200 medley relay team with classmate Lydia Smith and freshmen Eva Hill and Katherine Gautier that finished in 2:21.10.

Woolard teamed with Smith, Hill and freshman Caroline Mitchell to win the 200 freestyle relay in 2:09.67.

Smith led a Pam Pack sweep of the 100 freestyle in 1:12.88. Gautier was second in 1:14.61, while Hill took third in 1:18.31. Smith also took third in the 50 freestyle in 31.10.

Gautier won the 100 breaststroke in 33.28 while Mitchell was second in 1:45.58.

Junior Jacob Spivey led the boys with victories in the 100 freestyle (1:07.8) and the 100 breaststroke (1:34.77. He also teamed with Gabe Niederhouser, Keenan Curtis and Tanner Moore to win the 200 free relay in 1:58.86 seconds. The same quartet finished seond in the 200 medley relay in 2:27.33.

Davis Jones was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:42.83.

Southside senior Ty Cole won the 50 freestyle in 24.89 seconds and the 100 backstroke in 1:05.06. Teammates Jacob Taylor (1:12.26) and Taylor Ashely (1:14.85) were second and fourth in the 100 freestyle.
