Stevie Green graduated from Washington High School in 2014 with a legacy few have matched since. He was the WND Offensive Player of the Year after leading the Pam Pack football team to the East finals then went on to have a stellar year on the basketball court before signing with Elizabeth City State to play football.

Green transferred to Fayetteville State, where he had a standout career and has returned to WHS to teach and coach.

After assisting Matt Taylor with the football team, Green has taken the head coaching reins of the girls basketball team. The group has not won a game since late in the 2021-22 season and returns only three experienced players from last year, but Green remains undaunted.

“I like a challenge,” he said. “It will be a learning experience for all of us, but the girls have responded well so far. They are figuring out that I will push them past where they think they can go and that I expect them to compete the entire game no matter the score. Our conference is tough, so we will take our lumps, but I expect us to win some games as well.”

Senior Triniti Burke, who will be playing for her third coach in four seasons, returns along with junior point guard Avery Thomas and reserve Jasmine Granados. Burke was the Pam Pack’s All-Conference selection after averaging 10.1 and five rebounds a game.

“I’ve known Triniti since she was a little kid because her brother and I are close friends,” Green said. “It’s been an adjustment for her to get used to me as Coach Green, but she’s coming along. She has the talent and the potential to improve. It’s my job to help them all improve and we are off to a decent start.”

Thomas returns for her third season in the starting lineup after averaging five points and two assists last year. Granados appeared in 13 games off the bench.

That is the extent of the experienced players; the rest of the 13-player roster is new to varsity basketball.

Green mentioned freshmen Naariah Randolph, Elizabeth Barrera Meza, Makyilyah Williams along with senior Bryonna Pope among the players who have caught his attention during pre-season workouts.

“They can all help us, it’s just a matter of game experience,” Green said.

“I know what lies ahead and I plan on sticking around to build this program. I don’t sugar coat and I don’t let up. I’m teaching them the right way to do things and if we hustle and do the little things, we are going to be better than people expect.”

The Pam Pack opens at home Thursday against Perquimans and hosts Pasquotank Friday.
