ECU women win fourth straight

ORLANDO, Fla. - East Carolina held off a feisty UCF team, defeating the Knights 80-66 for their fourth straight win.
East Carolina (10-11, 4-4 C-USA) took a four-point lead, 38-34, into the half as LaCoya Terry scored on a put-back with time expiring. After the Knights went up 7-2 early, five straight points by Gabriela Husarova sparked a 14-0 run by the Lady Pirates, taking the 16-7 lead.
UCF (8-13, 1-7) used a 7-2 run to open the second half to retake the lead, 41-40. The Lady Pirates responded, scoring seven unanswered points to go back on top, 47-41.
Three Lauren Cochran layups and a Jasmine Young basket put ECU up nine, 57-48, with 10:53 to play. UCF answered, going on a 9-0 run to tie the game at 57-all with 8:31 on the clock. Husarova’s three-pointer with 8:15 put the Lady Pirates up 60-57, a lead they would not give up.
Young led all scorers with 22 points. Terry added 16 points, seven rebounds, and six assists, while Husarova pitched in 13 points and six boards.
The Lady Pirates play host to Tulane Thursday.
Pirates fall
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Jeremy Wise scored a game-high 28 points and R.L. Horton added 22 as Southern Miss defeated East Carolina 92-69 Saturday.
The Golden Eagle scoring output in the contest tied their most ever in a Conference USA game, tying a 92-point effort on March 2, 2002, against USF.
Southern Miss (11-10 overall, 3-4 C-USA) now has won the last four meetings over the Pirates (7-12, 1-5) as the last two victories have been by an average of 30.5 points.
Reserve John Fields tallied a team-high 13 points for ECU, while Cory Farmer, Sam Hinnant and Brock Young all tallied 10 points for the Pirates.
ECU returns to action Wednesday at home against Rice.
