The Washington High School basketball season is off to a positive start after a pair of home victories over Pasquotank County of Elizabeth City.

Girls: WHS 47 Pasquotank Co. 30: Coming off an opening night 60-48 loss to Perquimans Thursday, Washington bounced back with a victory that snapped a 23-game losing streak that dated back to the end of the 2021-22 season. The Pack jumped out to a 19-2 lead after the first quarter and never let the Panthers (0-3) get closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

Junior transfer Breanna Perry led the Pack with 22 points, including three 3-point shots, after playing her first two years for Trinity Christian in Greenville. Senior Triniti Burke scored 11 points, while junior guard Avery Thomas added eight.

“We were more confident tonight and turned steals into layups in the first quarter,” first-year coach Stevie Green said. “I wasn’t too worried about the streak, but the girls who went through it last year are glad it’s over. Breanna is just a baller and likes to play. She can score and create for her teammates, so she’ll help us a lot this season.

Boys: WHS 96 Pasquotank 55: Jerai Davenport scored on a driving layup, Chaise Smith hit a 3-pointer from the left wing, Javon Williams drove in for two, then Smith hit a layup and a free throw for a 10-1 WHS advantage before the Panthers could even blink on the way to a big opening night victory.

“We wanted to step on the gas early to see if they could stay with us in transition,” coach David Allewalt said. “We got up and down the floor very well tonight and in a controlled way. We shared the ball well, played with great energy and set the pace from the opening tip. Our bench guys played well and I’m happy with everyone’s effort tonight.

Williams led four players in double figures with 28 points, Smith had 24, while Gary Payne and Davenport added 12 each.
