UPDATE: The drawbridge on U.S. 17 Business in Washington has reopened after electrical repairs to the arms were completed. The bridge was closed for one hour, according to the City of Washington’s Facebook page.

The drawbridge on U.S. 17 Business in Washington is expected to close for several hours on Friday, Dec. 8 while undergoing repairs to the arms, according to Beaufort County Emergency Services Director, Chris Newkirk. Drivers should use the Bypass until further notice.

Newkirk spoke with the North Carolina Department of Transportation at 11:34 on Friday morning who said they are waiting on the arrival of an electrician to repair the bridge. Per an announcement from the City of Washington’s Facebook page, the “arms of the bridge are down and they have no power to the bridge currently to put them back up.”

The bridge is located on U.S. 17 Business which connects Washington and Chocowinity. All lanes of U.S. 17 Business were opened on Wednesday through final touches – bridge joints and pavement markings – will be completed in the new year. Drivers should anticipate lane closures and traffic shifts, The North Carolina Department of Transportation reported on Wednesday.
