Nellie Allen Sawyer, 88, of Scranton, died peacefully on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, at ECU Health Beaufort Hospital, Washington.

Mrs. Nellie was born in Beaufort County, NC on April 5, 1935, to the late Guy L. and Asia Bell Stotesberry Allen. She was married to Chancy Junior Sawyer who preceded her in death.

She was a member of the Scranton Christian Church a place that was always dear to her heart and where she enjoyed attending and fellowshipping with her church family.

Mrs. Nellie’s most fond memories were made surrounded by her family. She cherished every moment with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren gathered around her table to enjoy her cooking and the homemade biscuits she often made for her husband. Among her favorite things were crocheting and cane pole fishing.

A gathering with friends and family will take place on Friday, December 29, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., at Bryan Funeral Service, Swan Quarter. A private inurnment will be held at a later date.

Surviving are three sons, Guy W. Sawyer of Scranton, Mike L. Sawyer (Charlene) of Scranton, John W. Sawyer (Lisa) of Pantego; a foster son, Mike Blizzard of Scranton; four daughters, Juanita S. Acker of Vanceboro, Marlyn S. Bridgman (Kirby) of Fuquay Varina, Margaret S. Gibb (James) of Greensboro and Angelia S. Truluck (Robert) of Darlington, SC; one daughter in law, Phyllis Sawyer of Virginia; eighteen grandchildren; thirty-three great grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and a sister Annetta S. Smithwick of Grifton.

She was preceded in death by a son, Joe Don Sawyer; four grandchildren, one great grandchild; two brothers and two sisters.
