Washington and Northside faced bigger schools Saturday as the post-season draws closer.
The Pam Pack finished second in the 12-team River City Invitational in Elizabeth City that included six highly rated teams from Virginia, including meet champion Grassfield HS. WHS finished ahead of the host school, conference foe North Pitt, Roanoke Rapids, Pasquotank and Hertford Co. from North Carolina.
Freshman Bryce Perry (113) along with seniors Christian Price (120) and Bryant Smith (157) were champions in their weight class, while senior TraQuan Haywood (165) and sophomores Gabe Foreman (144) and Trenton Baldree (175) finished second. Freshman Sam Boltes (106), sophomore Cooper Johnson (215) and junior David B-Meza (138) took third.
“We had a great showing against outstanding competition,” coach Chris Penhollow said. “We like facing out-of-state competition late in the season because it’s usually a different style that we are not used to seeing. Bryce (Perry) had a difficult match against his Grassfield opponent and so did Christian (Price) and Bryant (Smith). I thought Cooper (Johnson) and Trenton (Baldree) did great in earning their first career medals by taking third. Neither had wrestled before last year and have improved a lot.”
Washington will host North Pitt and Farmville Central at 5:30 Wednesday in match that was moved from North Pitt. All the conference teams will wrestle each other Saturday in Dave Smith Gym.
Northside faced bigger schools in all five matches at the Chargers Duals at Ayden-Grifton HS and earned a victory over Manteo after losing to the host school, Currituck Co., North Johnston and West Craven.
Senior Gus Vansant won four of his five matches at 175 lb., while Rylan Paul picked up a pair of victories on the mat against Ayden-Grifton and North Johnston. David Kirk (138 Faithful Fulcher (132) won twice, while Nick Edwards (190), Eder Alonso-Hernandez (215) and Nick Jordan (285) won on the mat on
