Ernestine Grooms Cox, a spirited soul with a green thumb and a heart full of love, passed away on December 16, 2023, in Washington, NC, at the age of 92. Born on August 10, 1931, in Rockfish, NC, Ernestine lived a life filled with beauty and joy.

Ernestine was a bank teller by profession, always keeping things buttoned up and well-dressed. But her true passions lay outside the walls of the bank. She had an uncanny ability to make any garden flourish with her magical touch, earning her the reputation of having a green thumb. The seasons came alive through her love for gardening, and she cherished the joy that fresh air and blooming flowers brought into her life.

Just like her vibrant garden, Ernestine’s personality was a breath of fresh air. Thoughtful, loyal, and supportive, she made sure to call everyone on their birthdays, spreading cheer and warm wishes. She was the life of every seasonal festivity and celebration, adorning her home with beautiful decorations and cooking up a storm for her loved ones. Entertainment was her specialty, and she knew how to bring a smile to everyone’s faces.

Ernestine’s kindness extended far beyond the boundaries of her immediate family. She was always there to lend a helping hand, and did so in with a loving, adventurous spirit.

Ernestine leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and lasting memories. She is preceded in death by her parents, Manley Grooms and Lula King, as well as her beloved husband of nearly 70 years, C.W. Cox. Her passing also marks the loss of her brothers Roy, Paul, Howard, Murray, Nash, Gene, and Charles; and sisters Lib Melvin and Ada Jones.

Ernestine will forever be cherished by her daughters Ann C. Barnes of Raleigh, NC, and Becky Cox of Washington, NC. She was a loving mother-in-law to Wayne Barnes and a proud grandmother to Nathan Barnes.

A visitation to celebrate Ernestine’s was held at Joseph B. Paul Jr. Funeral Service on Tuesday December 23, 2024. We pay tribute to this tiny, tenacious woman who touched our lives with her joy, kindness, and indomitable spirit.
Ernestine Grooms Cox may have left this earthly realm, but her legacy of love and happiness will continue to bloom in our hearts forever. May she rest in eternal peace.

Joseph B. Paul Jr. Funeral Service is honored to assist the Cox family.
