Southside defensive back/receiver Nolan Dixon committed to play football at North Carolina Wesleyan University in Rocky Mount Wednesday.
Dixon, along with co-captain Tequon Moore, were the only seniors to play all four years for head coach Jeff Carrow.
“He’s improved tremendously since he joined us as a freshman and I’m very proud of all the hard work he’s put in to earn this opportunity,” Carrow said. “His footwork and quickness have gotten better and he is a very good open field tackler. It’s much for difficult for a high school kid to get a shot at any college level with the transfer portal and I know he will continue to work hard to see the field.”
Dixon, at 5’11 160 lb. also plays basketball and runs track for the Seahawks. He’s trying to return to the state track meet for the second straight year in the 4 x 800 relay and thinks his speed will help him to compete at the Division III level.
“I know I need to get faster and stronger, but I think my speed helped me get noticed,” Dixon said. “They want me as a defensive back, probably at safety, so I’ve been working on my technique since our season ended.”
The Battling Bishops went 4-6 last fall with a freshman-heavy roster and compete in the DIII USA South Conference along with Greensboro and Methodist College from North Carolina and several other schools in Virginia.
“The coaches told me they played a lot of freshmen and the opportunity was there if I worked for it,” Dixon said. “They want be to put on 15 pounds by July, so I’m in the weight room as much as possible.”
He plans on majoring in Exercise Science with an eye toward following his parents, Meredith and Stanley, into the teaching/coaching profession someday.
“I’m really interested to see how the college coaches approach things and the difference between the college and high school levels,” he said. “I’m excited and nervous at the same time, but I think it will be a fun experience.”
