Northside’s girls and boys basketball teams completed a season sweep of their county rival with 74-57 and 85-57 home victories over Southside Tuesday.
The two wins for the boys were the first since 2018-19, snapping a streak of nine consecutive losses. Senior Griffin Johnson led five Panthers in double figures with 22 points. Sophomore Malachi Moore scored 17, junior Nick Moore had 12 and junior Max Vansant added 10.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve beaten them here and I’m pleased with the way we moved the ball tonight,” coach Jared Adams said. “Our defense forced a lot of turnovers and we were able to score off them. We calmed down in the second half and played like we normally do. Our balanced scoring was outstanding also.”
Northside (15-6, 4-3) led 19-14 after the first quarter, but pushed the margin to 40-24 at halftime, then responded with 21 points in the fourth quarter to set the final margin.
Junior Josh Armstrong led the Seahawks (3-17, 0-6) with 25 points, while Jeremiah Satchel added 15.
The Panthers girls jumped out to a 29-7 lead, then survived a couple of mild threats to win 74-57. Senior Mariah Jones led Northside (15-3, 4-3,) with 25 points, junior Olivia Jane (O.J.) Cahoon had 19 and Madison Scheffler added 12.
“O.J. got in foul trouble so Mimi (Jones) ran the point a lot for us tonight and it worked out well,” coach Michelle Leathers said. “Our defense forced a bunch of turnovers and (freshman) Sophie Berry did a great job hounding them. Our reserves saw quite a bit of action as well, so it was a good night all around.”
Former Northside standout Misty Mooring returned to her former gym for the first time as the Seahawks coach. Mooring is among the Panthers all-time scoring, assist and steals leaders.
“it was fun to see several familiar faces and to be back in my old gym,” Mooring said. “We played a lot better than we did against them the first time and scored a decent amount of points. Our defense needs to be better, but I think we completed well over all.”
Junior Tamya Smith led the Seahawks (12-7, 2-4) with 20 points, 15 coming in the second half. I’Kirilah Minor had 19 and Kalia Moore added 10.
