Southside pitcher-shortstop Cutter Williams will continue his career after his senior season ends.
Williams, a right-hander, committed to Mid-Atlantic Christian University in Elizabeth City earlier this week after a standout junior campaign.
“He was our top pitcher and one of our offensive leaders,” last year’s coach Stanley Dixon said. “He’s a great kid with a passion for baseball and I’m looking for him to have another great spring for us before he goes off to college.”
Williams developed his baseball passion at an early age after his father, Clint, signed him up for Chocowinity Rec League T-ball when he was five.
“I owe pretty much everything I’ve done in baseball to my dad,” Williams said. “He put a bat and ball in my hand and I’ve loved baseball ever since. I’m excited and grateful for the opportunity to keep playing.”
Williams hit .344 with one home run and 13 runs batted in as a junior as the Seahawks lost in the first round of the 1A playoffs to Bear Grass. He started on the mound and struck out seven in 4.2 innings and allowed one earned run. He fanned 58 batters in 44.2 innings for the season.
“They told me I would mainly pitch in college, which is fine with me,” Williams said. “I enjoyed my campus visit and the religious aspect stuck with me. They have mandatory Bible study and chapel, which will help bring me closer to God. I sent videos to a bunch of coaches and MACU wanted me the most, so I’m excited to keep playing.”
Williams plans on majoring in Business, but knows there’s business left to take care of in high school.
“He’s a leader and has great presence on the field,” new coach John Lohman said. “He’ll hit in the middle of the order and pitch regularly for us, so he should have a productive senior season.”
