One set of adult skeletal remains and clothing was found near River Road in Washington on Sunday, Feb. 18 by detectives with Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO).
The remains were given to a medical examiner with ECU Health who will collect a DNA sample. The examiner will determine the sex and age of the remains. BCSO does not have a time frame of when they will receive results.
BCSO believes the remains have been in a wooded area between Pamlico Village and Asbury Church Road for “several seasonal changes” given the amount of surrounding “vegetative debris.”
On Sunday, BCSO received a tip of possible human remains found near a wooded area. The tip came from a person walking through the area in search of deer antlers. Detectives canvassed the area on foot and with a drone. They were able to confirm the presence of adult skeletal remains.
This is an active investigation, BCSO said.
