Southside’s do-everything senior Tequon (Tater) Moore’s days on the football field will continue at Elizabeth City State in the fall.
Moore, a four-year starter at running back and defensive back for the Seahawks, chose the Vikings after returning from his campus visit earlier this winter.
“I liked it when I was up there, but I had to come home and think about it,” Moore said. “I liked a lot of things about Chowan also, but I have family near Elizabeth City and I liked the coaches and how the campus looked. I’m excited to get started.”
Moore was the Coastal Plains 1A/2A Conference Special Teams Player of the Year after leading the Seahawks in almost all categories on both sides of the ball.
He ran for 737 yards and 19 touchdowns, caught 11 passes for 272 yards and six touchdowns and recorded 1,208 all-purpose yards including punt and kickoff returns. Moore led the defense with 61 tackles from his cornerback spot and intercepted three passes, including one he returned for a touchdown.
“He was our MVP for a reason,” coach Jeff Carrow said. “He’s been a great four-year player for us and can help Elizabeth City basically anywhere they put him. He’s a scat back kind of guy who can run the jet sweep for them and can do a great job on special teams. He was a lot of fun to coach and I’ll miss him.”
Moore was chosen for the 252-919 All Star game in December, but didn’t play because of a knee injury that also forced him to miss the basketball season.
“My rehab is going well and I will be ready for football season,” Moore, a Sports Management major, said. “I think I have a good chance to play and I’m ready to go to work.”
