The streets of downtown Washington will soon be awash in green as the community comes together for the 3rd Annual St. Patrick’s Day 5K and Pub Crawl on Mar. 16. Hosted by The Rotary Club of Washington, this year’s festivities promise more than just a run and a fun night out; they’re a chance to make a tangible difference in the community.

Starting at 4 p.m. from Festival Park, participants can either run or walk through the downtown area. But the fun doesn’t stop at the finish line. A pub crawl with samples from ten different vendors, offering food discounts and beverage choices, will follow, ensuring a lively atmosphere well into the evening. The event aims to support the Beaufort County Public Schools Literacy Fund.

“We’ve added more vendors this year, so there are more stops along the way,” said Read Allen, a member of The Rotary Club of Washington and one of the organizers, emphasizing the growth and community support the event has seen. 

Registration for the event is $30, which includes a long-sleeved t-shirt and a commemorative cup, with awards for the top three finishers in various age categories. There is also the option to partake in the pub crawl without participating in the 5K. The presenting sponsors for the event are 1906 Bistro and Bourbon Bar and Elite Truck.

Initially aiming for 50 participants in its first year, the event saw close to 200, growing to 250 last year. Allen hopes to match or exceed that number this year.

“Our focus has not only looked to support the literacy fund but to bring awareness to what’s going on downtown and help the merchants,” explained Allen.

Since 2022, the event has donated $33,000 back into the community, with $14,000 going directly to literacy programs. This significant contribution underscores the event’s impact and the community’s commitment to supporting important causes.

Additionally, this year will incorporate the option to participate in the Beer Mile, hosted by the Beaufort County Young Professionals, beginning at 6 p.m. This event is unique, offering both individual and relay team categories, and unlike the 5K, funds raised from the Beer Mile will support the young professionals organization. Registration for this event is separate from the 5K and Pub Crawl, but those wishing to participate in both – or a combination of activities – can do so.
