Last week, the NCISAA released their boys and girls All-State teams for the 2023 – 2024 season and two PCA Raiders made the 1A teams. Senior Maddox Lee was selected to the 1A boys team while Junior Allison Sawyer made the 1A girls team.
Lee is believed to be just the second ever boys basketball player from Pungo Christian Academy to be selected to the All-State team, joining PCA all-time leading scorer and rebounder Terry Radcliffe. Lee had an outstanding senior season, scoring a career high 513 points for an 18.3 ppg average while grabbing 5 boards and dishing out 4 assists per game. Lee was also named TIC Player of the Year, was selected to the TIC All-Tournament team, and was named team MVP at the Raiders Winter Sports Banquet. Lee finished his career with 1,351 points scored in his three years on varsity, just 13 points behind PCA great Jason Baker for second all time. Lee is also believed to be just the second male in school history to win player of the year in multiple sports (Soccer and Basketball), joining Brad Stoop (Basketball and Baseball) and is also believed to be the first male athlete in school history to be selected to an All-State team in multiple sports. Lee is the first male basketball players selected to the All-State team in 16 years, with Mychal Parker from Terra Ceia Christian being the last to do so in 2008. Parker would transfer to the Miller School the following year before committing to play basketball at the University of Maryland. Lee’s basketball career appears to be over, but he is leaving behind quite the legacy at Pungo Christian Academy.
Sawyer becomes the third Lady Raider to be selected to the girls All-State team in the last five years, joining Lauren Kellie Ricks and Reagan Stoop. Sawyer had a dominant junior season cut short by an ACL tear the second to last week of the regular season. Despite not playing the last four weeks, she still finished fourth in NCISAA 1A girls basketball in double doubles with 13. Sawyer averaged 15 points, which was 5th in NCISAA 1A girls, and 14.8 boards per game, 1st overall in NCISAA 1A. Her 26 rebounds against TEACH on December 1st are the most ever in a game in school history, in boys or girls basketball. The record of 24 rebounds was previously held by Sylvia Newman, PCA’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder. Sawyer was named to the TIC All-Conference team as well as being named Offensive Player of the Year for PCA. With a senior season to play yet, Sawyer can join some elite company if she is able to repeat on the All-State team next season.
