Heavy rain forecast for tonight, Thursday

Our office is currently monitoring a weather system that is expected to bring heavy rain to our area tonight and tomorrow. Forecast details for Beaufort County includes:

Rain

  • Rain chances are expected to increase after 2pm today with widespread rain likely by 11pm tonight. Rain will continue through sunset Thursday, with most areas of our county receiving 3 to 4 inches.
    • Areas along and west of Hwy 17 could receive locally higher amounts.
  • Our heaviest rains are expected to occur between 2am and 2pm Thursday. Localized flash flooding will be possible in low lying areas and / or areas with poor drainage during this time.

Winds

  • Elevated sustained NE / N / NW winds between 10 and 15 mph, with frequent gust of 20 to 25mph are forecasted for Thursday and Friday.

Thunderstorms

  • Scattered thunderstorms are possible between 5pm tonight and sunrise tomorrow morning.

Attached is an updated briefing for the coastal low that is forecast to bring several hazards to the area starting tonight and continuing into Friday morning, March 27-29, 2024.

Changes since the last Briefing

  • Heavy Rain – Have recently issued a Flood Watch for Coastal Plain Counties as rainfall amounts have increased once again. Current forecast shows widespread rainfall amounts between 2-5 inches with locally higher amounts possible especially west of Hwy 17.
  • Strong Winds –  Threat hasn’t changed much with winds peaking Thursday evening into Friday morning. Strongest wind gusts located along the OBX
  • Dangerous Marine Conditions – Gale force gusts and seas 7-10 feet
  • Coastal Flooding – Minor coastal flooding possible with strong northwesterly winds
