According to the seeds for the 1A state baseball tournament, the Southside Seahawks season should have ended in the first round. Instead, they’ve knocked off the 11 and the sixth seed and are looking at a third round game at county rival Northside if the Panthers win Saturday.

The 22nd seeded Seahawks (11-9) traveled three and a half hours east to win their first tournament game in program history, 4-2 at Ocracoke Tuesday, then rode the bus the same distance west to knock off Chatham Charter (19-7), 1-0, Friday.

Junior Luke Bullock pitched a complete game one-hitter with five strikeouts and three walks, while Taylor Ashley drove in Gavin Cutler with the game’s only run in the sixth inning.

“Luke kept them off balance all night and nobody really hit the ball with authority,” coach John Lohman said. “His defense made plays behind him and we managed to get a timely hit. These last two games have been true team efforts and we are excited to still be playing.”

Meanwhile, #3 Northside’s game against #19 Oxford Prep was rained out and is scheduled to be played at 12 p.m. Saturday. If the Panthers win, the county rivals will meet at Northside Tuesday.

The fifth-seeded Washington girls second round softball game against #12 Heide-Trask was also rained out and is scheduled for 5 p.m. Monday.
