The Northside golf team battled through wind and rain at 7 Lakes Golf Club near Pinehurst to tie for eighth place in the 1A state tournament.
Rain stopped the tournament after all players completed nine holes Tuesday. The Panthers five-player 27-hole total of 546 was good for eighth with Rosewood High School.
Mitchell HS repeated as the 1A champs with 474 team total, led by senior medalist Connor Warren who shot 107 total, 72 on day one and 35 through nine on day two.
“I was proud of the way we kept our composure under terrible conditions Tuesday,” Northside coach Jared Adams said. “It’s hard to concentrate with the wind and rain in your face and to putt through standing water. We have practiced in the rain to prepare and we battled through some tough spots.”
Senior Gavin Sawyer led the Panthers with a 121 two-day total. He shot 84 the first day and completed the first nine in 37 on the second day. He was on the 14th hole when play stopped.
“He could have shot a 74 or 75 the way he was playing,” Adams said. “He hit the ball well off the tee and chipped well even though the greens were soaked.”
Seniors Cooper Evans (138), Wyatt Berry (141) and Gus Vansant (48 on day two) and junior Max Vansant (98 on day one) completed the Northside team total.
Northside finished ahead east regional opponents North East Carolina Prep (near Tarboro) which finished 11th with 572 strokes and Lejeune which finished 12th with 608 strokes.
“We were back to back conference and regional champions and improved our finish from last year in tougher conditions, “Adams said. “I am pleased with our season and the way we competed under adverse circumstances.”
