Washington and Southside’s girls soccer seasons ended Thursday as the Pam Pack fell at home, while the Seahawks lost on the road.

Sixth-seeded Washington (17-1-1) saw its undefeated season end with a 7-0 home loss to #11 North Carolina School of Science & Math after allowing seven goals in their previous 18 contests.

The Durham-based Unicorns (15-4), a squad made up of juniors and seniors only, scored four goals over a 20-minute span to take a 4-0 halftime lead, then the Pack defense held them scoreless for the first 20 minutes of the second half.

Washington had two good scoring chances in the second half, but one shot hit the post and the other went wide. NCSSM responded with three goals in the final 20 minutes to advance.

“We knew they were going to be good and they sent a fast pace from the start,” coach Kendall Cox said. “They played harder and more intense and it was hard for us to keep up. I was proud of the way we kept pushing until the end and we played really well during the first 20 minutes of the second half.”

Seniors MaryPage Moore, Haleigh Tallcott, Leah Chavez, Ruth San Juan Gonzalez and Savannah Trower ended their careers with a conference championship and an unbeaten regular season.

“I’ll miss all of them and Haleigh will leave a hole on defense,” Cox said. “They really rocked it all year and were the strength of our team.”

Meanwhile, #13 Southside lost 6-0 at #4 Hobbton in the 1A playoffs to end the season 12-8-3 for the first winning season in program history.

“They were very good and deserve the credit,” coach Jay Petty said. “Injuries finally caught up to us and we were missing some key players. We had a couple of scoring chances but couldn’t convert. We made it to the second round, had our first winning season and defeated some opponents for the first time, so it was a great year. We lose an outstanding senior group, but have a good core group returning.”

Lilly Davis, Laney Linton, Emma Silva, Vanessa Gonzalez, Selena Mondragon Robledo, Ginny Gray, Yoreyma Vargas, Jaymison Johnson and Ryleigh Hombrig make up the Southside senior class.
