Mary Day Moore passed away peacefully at home on May 16, 2024.

Mary was born to Theodore and Mary McInnis Day on April 9, 1937 in South Creek, NC. She is preceded in death by her parents, brother-in-law Morris McGahey, and husband of 38 years, Stuart Beckwith Moore.

She is survived by a family who loved her dearly. She was “the best mama in the world” to son Stuart Beckwith Moore, Jr. (Lisa, second daughter) and daughter Mary Kate Moore Purvis (Martin, second son), “sis” to her sister Sally McGahey and brother Ted Day (Lou), and “Grand-Mary” to Nicholas, Will, and Alex Aycock and many loving nieces and nephews.

Mary graduated from Washington High School and attended Atlantic Christian College. She enjoyed many years of teaching at Calvary Church Preschool and later retired from Edgecombe County Schools after working in the media center at Pattillo Elementary School.

She was an active member of Calvary Episcopal Church, serving in many ways through the Episcopal Church Women and Altar Guild. She was also very active in the community through various organizations including the Tarboro Woman’s Club and Meals on Wheels.

Her greatest passion, however, was her family and friends. She loved getting everyone together and took great pleasure in planning for a party. She had an amazing talent for making every occasion, big or small, feel special. She loved all things beautiful and taught us from a very young age to appreciate the wonders of birds chirping, a North Carolina sunset, or a full moon shining in the night.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvary Episcopal Church (Churchyard fund) or ECU Health Heart & Vascular Care.
