The Washington Post 15 Junior American Legion baseball team won 9-0 over Wayne County Thursday night at Washington High School for their second win in a row and a 5-6 overall record.

The game against Wayne County is the first of five straight home games to finish off the regular season before the district tournament in Ahoskie. While it is impossible for Washington to get the number one seed, in a perfect scenario they are still eligible for the number two seed in the playoffs.

Washington used three pitchers; Caleb Grandy, Thomas Dash, and Ashton Willard who combined for two walks, four strikeouts, and two hits. Grandy allowed both hits while both Dash and Willard allowed zero.

Offensively they were effective as well as the team had eight hits with Jacob Spivey and Willard each getting two RBI’s and Jackson Harding getting two hits, one of which being an RBI. Lead-off batter Holden Boykin collected a hit, drew three walks and scored four times as Washington plated one run in the first inning, two in the second, four in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one in the sixth. They were also efficient with two outs with six of their nine runs coming in two out situations.

Head coach Bobby Boyd credits the success to pitching and defense. “If we pitch well and play solid defense, we will manufacture enough runs to win,” Boyd said. “To be a champion, you need to convert opportunities to score. When you can do that with two outs, that’s championship quality baseball.”

Post 15 plays a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. at Washington High School against the Outer Banks to try to continue to put themselves in the best possible position for the district tournament.
