The Beaufort County Junior American Legion Post 15 baseball team advanced to the district tournament semi-finals with a 13-8 come-from behind victory over Bear Grass Sunday afternoon in Ahoskie.
Post 15 has won eight consecutive games for an 11-6 overall record and will take on the winner of top-seeded Perquimans and #5 Ahoskie Tuesday afternoon with a trip to the championship game on the line. The top two teams advance to the state tournament in Goldsboro.
Post 15 was coming off a 4-1 home victory over Bear Grass but trailed 7-0 into the bottom of fifth inning. However, the local squad erupted for 13 runs on seven hits, several walks and took advantage of three Bear Grass errors to pull out a 13-8 victory.
“It was amazing to watch,” head coach Bobby Boyd said. “Our guys are focused and locked in and want to bring back Beaufort County’s first district title. None of the four coaches have a kid involved and it was fun to watch these guys battle through the heat and be successful.”
Jacob Spivey drove in three runs with a bases-loaded triple in the big inning, while Evan Woolard, Ashton Willard and Holden Boykin had key hits.
Caleb Grandy picked up the pitching win in relief of Luke Bullock and Trenton Allen.
“We have enough pitching to get through the rest of the tournament,” Boyd said. “We didn’t want to use more than three in the first game, so we’re in good shape.”
