A fundraising event will be held on Friday, July 5 at the Ware Creek Rosenwald School in Blounts Creek. The social mixer will include guest speaker Lucretia Moore, whose maternal grandparents and some of her mother’s siblings attended the school. There will also be an open discussion about the school’s history and current plans for its use moving forward “This school has served as a beacon of learning and community for the folks here in Blounts Creek for over 100 years,” said Phyllis Moore-Johnson, president of the Ware Creek Rosenwald School Community Center. “We want everyone, young and old to come out and learn about its history and what it did for people of color back in the day.”
Funds from the event will go towards ongoing efforts to bring internet connectivity to the school as well as help maintain and preserve the school, support its educational programs, and provide a space for community engagement and fellowship “We want to make the school a community communications area,” said Johnson. “If folks don’t have internet or computers at their homes we want to have a place for them to go. Eventually, we would like to be able to purchase enough laptops so we have what I call a lending library of computers.”
Raffle tickets can be purchased for $25 for a chance to win a new TV. Donations of any amount are welcome. Light refreshments including water, soda iced tea, and finger foods will also be provided. The event is free and open to the public. “We don’t want to leave anyone out, “ said Johnson. “This is all about building relationships.”
The event runs from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Friday, July 5 at the Ware Creek Rosenwald School located at 2144 Maules Creek Road in Blounts Creek. For additional information about the event or making donations email info@warecreekrosenwald.org.
