Mrs. Dottie Lou Fortescue O’Neal, age 63, a resident of the Ponzer community of Belhaven, NC died Sunday July 7, 2024, at her home with family by her side.

A private funeral service will be held for family at Paul Funeral Home of Belhaven officiated by Mike Caton.  A burial will follow in Epworth Church Cemetery in Scranton.

Mrs. Dottie was born in Beaufort County on April 8, 1961, daughter of the late Frank Wahab Fortescue, Jr. and Edna Earl Pittman Fortescue who survives.  She attended Hyde County Schools and Pungo Christian Academy in Belhaven.  On January 18, 2013, she married Walter M. O’Neal III who survives.  Dottie loved her family and enjoyed working in her flower gardens.  She was gifted with an eye for interior design as well as landscaping.  For many years Dottie enjoyed hunting with her father.  She enjoyed raising, training, and caring for hunting hounds.  She loved caring for all animals and was known to many in her community as their unofficial veterinarian.  Her knowledge of treating animals was truly a God given ability.  She had given her confession of faith and that made her a saved and redeemed member of God’s family.

Surviving along with her husband; Walter of the home; and mother: Edna of Washington is a son: Vincent Berry and his partner Jennifer Hemphill of Durham; a sister: Laura F. Willis and her husband Rocky of Washington; a nephew: William Nicholas Klapp and his wife Nikki of Washington; a great niece: Delaney Darleen Klapp of Washington; and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.  She was predeceased, along with her father by a sister: Lucy Hope Fortescue; paternal grandparents: Frank Fortescue, Sr., and Sallye Swindell Fortescue; and maternal grandparents: Earl Pittman and Annie Williams Pittman.
