Washington, NC – The UNC School of Medicine-NC STAR Network, in collaboration with Agape Health Services, and BC360 is excited to announce the upcoming Stigma Bootcamp on Tuesday, July 16th, from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm at Beaufort County Community College, Building 10. This essential training aims to equip medical professionals with culturally sensitive tools for treating individuals with substance use disorders. Lunch will be provided during this training.

Description: This educational training is designed to equip medical professionals with tools to adopt a culturally sensitive and responsive approach when treating those with substance use disorders. All medical professionals are invited to participate in this 4-hour training to learn about a variety of topics centered around stigma in the healthcare system. This training will explore an evaluation of our own stigmas, biases, and misconceptions, will evaluate structural inequities, and will examine how these inequities show up in our clinical practice.

Key Objectives:

1. Provide real-world examples of stigma and biases in clinical settings.
2. Discuss historical and structural inequities and their impact on trust in the healthcare system.
3. Utilize appropriate language and imagery when addressing substance use disorder.
4. Discuss how social determinants of health influence a patient’s experience with the healthcare system.
5. Describe key steps a clinician can take to facilitate trust in clinical encounters.

Target Audience: Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, peer support specialists, office staff, and others interested in this subject. All are welcome.
