On Aug. 17, Reaching for the Stars After School will be celebrating the achievements of its students. The annual event will recognize and honor those who have completed the 2024 summer program. “For the last ten years, we have served underprivileged, at-risk, K-8 youth in Washington who suffer from failing grades to behavioral and emotional issues,” said Flora Brooks, founder of Reaching for the Stars After School. “Our specific focus is on improving their reading and math skills and improving their overall social skills and self-confidence, through one-on-one tutoring. We also take them on field trips to experience new and different things here in Washington and other surrounding communities.”
The event is all about the students. Those who have improved their reading skills will read to the audience. Others who have made improvements in their self-confidence will sing. The parents of the students will also be sharing the impact the program has had on their children. Each student will receive a certificate indicating they have completed the program.
The celebration will be held at the Temple of Jesus Christ Fellowship Hall at 906 W. 8th St. from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17. The event is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted at the door. They will help to provide funding for the hiring of additional staff and support parents who might not otherwise be able to enroll their children.
