The Southside Seahawks will have a completely new offensive backfield when they open the season at North Duplin Friday.

Four-year starter Tequon Moore is at Elizabeth City State, fullback Brian Salinas transferred to Washington High School and quarterback Luke Bullock decided to focus on baseball, which leaves head coach Jeff Carrow and his staff with the task of plugging in new players and adapting the offense to fit their skills.

Senior MyQuon Clark takes over as the featured back after piling up almost 800 all-purpose yards as the third option last year, while sophomore Ryan Lewis assumes the quarterback role after contributing 24 tackles on defense as a freshman.

Others slated to see backfield action include sophomore Devonelle Brimage, juniors Isiah Knight, Teddrick Minor and Javonn McCal along with senior Zaykwon Tuten.

“We feel good about the guys we have back there and all of them can contribute,” Carrow said. “Lewis was our JV quarterback last year, so he’s familiar with the system and we’ll be patient as he gets comfortable. We’ll probably go with more plays from the shotgun, because he can run as well as pass. We have a lot of young guys this season, so it will be a process.”

The Seahawks took a while to gel last fall but won four of their last five regular season games after an 0-5 start.
Carrow expects the offensive and defensive lines to be this year’s strong suits while the offensive newcomers settle in.

Seniors Mickyle Sastre at 6’4 265 lbs. and Nehemiah Credle 6’1 295 lbs. along with 255 lb. junior Zymere Wiggins anchor both lines.

“We’re still evaluating the other spots on both lines, but those guys know what they are doing and will help the others,” Carrow said. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to rotate at several positions to keep guys fresh.”

The schedule features non-conference trips to North Duplin, Gates Co. and Rosewood with a home game against Martin Co. The Anchor Bowl will be at Northside Oct. 18.

“We’ll have our work cut out for us, but the guys are excited to get started,” Carrow said. “We’ve had a productive summer, and we saw some good things at the jamboree, so we’re starting on a positive note.”
