Beaufort County officials are continuing to investigate an Animal Services case involving horses in the Sidney community.
On Tuesday afternoon (Sept. 10), a community member informed Beaufort County Animal Services staff of her concerns about the welfare of multiple horses she had observed on a property in Sidney.
Within 30 minutes of that notification, Animal Services staff responded to the property. Responding personnel arrived to find one of the horses on the ground and unable to get up. This finding prompted an immediate request for the veterinarian of care and the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office to assist with the case. Unfortunately, after examining the down horse, the veterinarian of care concluded the need for euthanasia.
Within 24 hours of notification, Animal Services obtained ownership of the remaining four horses and one donkey through the owner surrender process. Those horses were transported to a foster facility, where their veterinary care continues.
This case is under active investigation by Animal Services and the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.
Beaufort County Emergency Services is grateful for the community member who reported this case to Animal Services staff. That notification prompted a response to an issue Animal Services had no prior knowledge of, but one that required immediate intervention.
That community member demonstrated a principle of animal welfare efforts: “If you see something, say something.” If you witness a situation where you know or suspect that an animal(s) is in distress or in a dangerous predicament, please immediately call Animal Services at 252-946-4517.
