A book critic, I’m not. A book reader, I am. Oh, yes. Truth to tell, my life would not have been so, well, full, had I not been a reader.

Of course, had I not been so blessed to love books, to love reading books, I wouldn’t have known what I was missing.

Where is this going, you may ask. It’s to share with you a bit, just a tiny bit about one of the most interesting, informative, non-fiction books that I have ever read, that’s where I’m going.

Titled “Eve of a Hundred Midnights,” by Bill Lasher, it is ineffably special.

En breve, it is the tale of “The star-crossed love story of two World War II correspondents and their epic escape across the Pacific.” That is but a cursory description. It is so much more than that.

“A gripping, well-told, and accurate reconstruction of a very dramatic and romantic time in the life of two young journalists caught in the upheavals of World War II Asia. A story of high adventure,” wrote Stephen R. MacKinnon, author of “China Reporting: An Oral History of American Journalism in the 1930s and 1940s.”

For those with more than a passing interest in the 30s and 40s, both nationally and internationally, and who have at least some familiarity with prominent figures and the many places in Asia where the war was waged, this book will be a veritable buffet, a smorgasbord, if you will, that pleases your reading palate.

Okay. I know. That was a bit of metaphor overkill.
