The intended column for this week had been written earlier, and then sent to the Daily News yesterday, as per usual.
And then, and then I watched Vice President Harris’ concession speech less than an hour ago. Also, we learned that she had some time earlier called President – Elect Trump and congratulated him for his victory.
In her relatively brief speech, given to a very, very large gathering at her alma mater Howard University ( an HBCU ) she spoke eloquently about those things that make this land we love one of the most noble experiments in governing ever conceived.
She spoke about the importance of always, always keeping the Constitution of the United States first and foremost in our vision, our commitment, our hearts.
She spoke without rancor about the election results, genuine and deep appreciation for all who had worked to support her candidacy, and who she said may be downhearted, but must resolve to continue the fight to make this land a more perfect union.
There were a lot of tears shed by many of the gathering of the faithful.
And yes, both she and President Biden will be at the January 20 inauguration, in the final act of the peaceful transfer of power that is an inviolable part of what this country is and who we are.
If you recall, this did not happen after the 2020 election. Further comment on my part is not needed.
So, after the tumult and shouting have subsided, let us heed the call of our brighter angels, who expect us to be the best of who we are.
A beautiful example of the transfer of power done as it should be.
Let each of us say, as in the song, “This is my country, land that I love …”
May it be so.
