Sam Long Cuthrell

Sam Long Cuthrell, 83, of 28100 U.S. Highway 264, Engelhard, died Monday, July 25, 2011, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Born in Hyde County, Dec. 15, 1927, he was the son of the late Henry D. and Marie Cahoon Cuthrell. His mother later married Johnny Parrish after her husband’s death.

Sam was a farmer until his retirement and following retirement engaged in used automobile sales. He was a former Rotarian in the Engelhard Rotary Club and for many years was a Mason and Shriner. He was a member of Watson’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the family plot in Soule Cemetery. Steve Bryan and pastor Charlie Reber will officiate.

Surviving are his wife, Lessie Mason Cuthrell; a son, Rusty Cuthrell of Cary, N.C.; three daughters, Diane C. Brauer and husband, Julius of Washington, Rita C. Berry and husband, Jimmy of Manteo and Angela C. Matthews and husband, Rick of Engelhard; grandchildren, Samuel P. Brauer, Eric M. Brauer, Andrew M. Berry, Stephen W. Berry, Rodney Allen  Berry Jr. and Brice Kenneth Marshall; great-grandchildren, Mason Berry, Dylan Berry, Luke Berry, Mary Brauer, Emily Brauer, Justin Brauer.

The family suggests that memorials be directed to Watson’s Chapel United Methodist Church, c/o Anita F. Fletcher, Treasurer, 30252 U.S. Highway 264, Engelhard, NC 27824. The family will receive friends at their residence.
