“It is Christmas again, and our kettle drive kicks off today!” exclaimed Sgt. Les Ashby, interim commander of the Washington Salvation Army Post. “Our goal this year is $85,000. The kettle drive and our sustaining campaign are our two largest fundraisers and keep us going. We may be small, but we can be mighty.”
In Washington, the kettles will be located at Walmart, both Food Lions, Belk, and Walgreens. In Williamson, they will be located at Walmart, Food Lion, and Roses. Each sign with the kettles will have a QR code, allowing folks to donate by phone if they don’t have any cash. They can also donate online at www.redkettle.org or by sending a check to the Salvation Army, PO Box 877, Washington, NC 27889. Those wishing to volunteer may do so by calling 252-946-2523.
“Need has no season,” said Ashby. “This is just the time of year for one of our main campaigns, but we are doing this 24/7, 365 days a year. We are so grateful to all of our donors for all they have given in the past and will donate again this year.”
Ashby and his wife, Sgt. Mary Ashby also announced that the Angel Trees are up at locations in Washington and Williamson. People can get an angel or angels from the trees and shop for a child in need. This year, 166 families will be served, along with 360 children. “We know that through this program, children will wake up very happy on Christmas morning, which gives us peace in our hearts,” said Mary Ashby. “That is what it is all about, giving to others.
Added Commander Ashby, “My wife goes through each donation that comes in. If there is not enough in the bag for the children, the Salvation Army will make sure they get an A and B toy on their list, clothes, and food. We want to try and make it as joyful of a Christmas as possible for them.”
In Washington, the trees are located at Walmart, Beal’s, and Beaufort County Community College. An Angel Tree is also located at the Walmart in Williamson.
And to bring a little extra Ho Ho to the season, board member Paige Davis would like to play Santa Claus for different agencies or holiday parties. He will donate all proceeds to the Salvation Army. To schedule Davis for an event, call 252-946-2523.
