Washington boys basketball rolls in season opener

Expectations are high for Washington High School’s varsity boys basketball team this season. They got off to a good start in a win last Friday.

Junior Chaise Smith finished with 34 points, connecting on four 3-pointers in the win. Jarryn Payne, also a junior, had 26 points and four 3-pointers while Javon Williams added 11 points.

Washington’s girls lost to Goldsboro and dropped two games in the Champion Durham Classic at Hillside High School, losing to Hillside and Jordan.

The Pam Pack boys, ranked among the top teams in Eastern North Carolina by HighSchoolOT.com, play again on Dec. 3 against South Central.

 

Southside earns split

Southside’s girls split two games last week against Croatan and Princeton while the Seahawks’ boys lost twice.

Southside’s boys dropped a 90-39 decision to Croatan and fell 49-41 to Princeton. Southside’s girls fell to Croatan, 46-18, but bounced back to beat Princeton, 58-35.

Lily McLean had 17 points to lead Southside in the win over Princeton. I’Kiriyah Minor added 14 points. The duo combined for 10 points in the loss to Croatan.

Southside hosts Martin County on Dec. 3.

 

Flag football Week 2

Northside’s flag football team posted a 3-0 record last weekend to improve to 5-1 on the season.

The Panthers beat New Bern 62-12, Washington 26-19 and West Craven 46-12. Northside’s only loss was a 24-18 overtime setback to Havelock in Week 1.

Washington went 2-1 to improve to 4-2 overall. The Pam Pack beat Southside 37-6 and Havelock, 39-13. Both of Washington’s losses have come to Northside.

Southside is seeking its first win after going 0-3 last weekend to drop to 0-6. The Seahawks lost to Washington and then fell to West Craven (32-0) and Havelock (37-6).

The teams are off this weekend due to Thanksgiving and will return to play the following Saturday with games at West Craven High School.

Washington was one of 30 schools to take part in the 2024 King of Wake Invitational wrestling tournament.
